I love this computer with every bit of my heart. I'm not a gamer so I dont have issues with it not being us to gaming snuff. I mostly use the internet to surf and microsoft office and countless chatting programs. Someone at one point said the screen was so shinny that any light source makes it completely useless, I don't seem to have this problem because I've been using it everyday and have never been blinded by light. The unit is lighter weight than my 15.5inch dell insipron (disaster computer) that is currently being replaced with this model. Someone else bitched about getting a blue screen of death, which I have yet to see after two weeks (they claimed it happened within the first hour). Another person said there was difficulty connecting a Bluetooth mouse, which I agreed with, as I just connected my mouse after about 30 minutes of struggling with it. However, it was finally connected after a 5 minute chat with Sony technical support, so it was more user error than computer. There not web button on mine, instead there is an assist button. When I clicked it I was prompted to start up in safe mode, so I am assuming that the assist button would be useful if you computer crashes. The i3 processor is crazy fast, as is windows 7. I really had no problem with vista and decided that everyone hated it because they were told to hate it, but windows 7 is quite amazing. It runs faster, extremely user/idiot friendly. The keyboard is really nice too, I was kind of nervous about this because the keys are all spaced out, unlike normal keyboards where all the buttons are tapered and adjacent to one another, but its actually really comfortable to type on. One draw back is that earlier models (before the i3 processor came out) were bluray players as well, which they took away probably because it was just too good of a computer for the $800 price tag. The speakers are a little lame, but its a laptop and I wouldn't expect a whole lot of them to begin with as long as they make noise that I can hear when I need to hear it I'm happy. Something else I like is that it has an optical drive. I know this seems like a trival thing but some of the other computer is the same class as this one have removed CD/DVD drives all together which a major deal breaker for me! Someone else complained that there are no shortcut buttons for volume control...really? How lazy are you that you can't hit "fn" F2 for mute? It one extra button, and the shortcut buttons on the dell never really worked well for me anyway. Sony VAIO VPC-CW21FX/R 14-Inch Laptop (Red)

For those of you looking at dells at well let me tell you that I built this EXACT same computer on Dells website and it was going to cost at least $100 bucks more which seems like highway robbery to me.
Something to be aware of, apparently new computers do not come with recovery disks anymore. So they highly encourage you to go out, buy a blank DVD, and create a recovery disk pretty much RIGHT out of the box.

Its just a beautiful laptop but iam very dissapointed of it because came with a hardware or system defect and sony service couldnt help to solve it so i had to return it. The problem consist that every time i tryed to connect to wifi windows said it couldnt and just after that present a blue screen with IRQL LESS OR EQUAL ERROR and reboot my pc. I tryed hard to find a cause with sony custumer care and technical service but nothing worked. :(
Hope to be more lucky next time..

After trying and returning an HP Mini 1000 from Verizon I ordered an X340 from Amazon and have no regrets. While I think the new 11.6" form factor machines (e.g. Acer 751h) will be ideal for train use, I wanted the perfect ultra-portable for home which had a little more horsepower and a bigger screen. As others have said, while this machine costs double what a 10" netbook does, it is a fraction of the price of a Macbook Air or Sony Vaio with pretty equivalent specs.
The packaging and design of the X340 are beautiful, and contrary to some other reviewers, I do not find it to be too plasticy or the keyboard to have too much flex. I think Timothy Lam's review is spot on so I won't duplicate. The machine runs Vista 32 respectably right out of the box, but I immediately upgraded to Windows 7 32-bit without a hitch or DVD drive using a shareware program called Virtual Clone Drive. Projected battery life increased by about 20 minutes to 4:07, but I have not had it long enough to cite what you can realistically expect. If that is unacceptable there is supposed to be an optional 8 cell battery, or you should consider the X320 with Atom Z530 and 8 hour battery life for $600 (same size and great screen).
I think the screen size is ideal for an ultra-portable, and despite the screen being glossy, I noticed very little glare, especially compared to the HP 1000. Although the touchpad lacks 2 discreet buttons, I found it to be excellent, as are the speakers for a notebook. The light weight and ergonomics were perfect for chilling on the couch, and working or surfing. It really is a delight to use, and kind of intoxicating.
In summary, depending on your needs, there is virtually nothing to dislike about this computer and I think MSI has scored a big hit in this 13.4" ultra-portable category

I purchased this model after debating over another model that I had purchased for my son. The very first day it displayed a "No Operating System found" message on a black screen. My husband told me to immediately return it. I gave it some time thinking it was a fluke. NOPE---tonight it began making a loud noise---then a blue error screen quickly disappeared to a black screen "No operating system found" message. I contacted SONY and was told this was hard-drive and they could not help me over the phone. It was suggested that I return the model for a new one. WELL---today is ONE DAY TOO LATE to return to AMAZON. Could I be any luckier? I would advise you to carefully examine the RETURN POLICY to AMAZON. After reading this tonight--I am thinking that I made a costly mistake to purchase a computer from Amazon and this model might have been a mistake as well.

"Let me start by saying that I use my computer for much more than average daily use. I record multi track audio (i.e. home studio), as well as average daily tasks. I also work in a place that is very much pro Mac/anti PC. That's okay, I'm not biased either way, you just get more horsepower for your money with PC.
I downsized from my desktop system which was a Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM on XP Pro. It was working, but I needed more horsepower (i.e. faster processor and more RAM), and I also figured a laptop that could suit my home studio needs would be perfect because I could then be mobile as well.
A lot of research went into purchasing a laptop. I left no stone unturned, and looked at ALL the models, up to a certain price range (under $1000), even models with lesser specs in certain areas than this one.
After much research, I decided this has everything I need. I've had it about three weeks now, and it's a great machine. Even some of my coworkers who prefer Macs said it's a nice laptop, and we all know computers where I work. After seeing the specs and the pricetag on this, they agreed that I did well.
My only gripe about it is that because it's a Vaio, it comes with TONS of extra Vaio software (as well as other trial software, and other programs that I have no use for). Three weeks later, I'm still experimenting with which Vaio software I should and should not uninstall. Some Vaio programs are necessary to operate things like the function keys, where others are not necessary. I will not post a list here, but search out the individual programs and make your own decision. Other than that, this thing ROCKS!!! Nice clear graphics, fast processor, good RAM (I plan to expand mine up to the allowable 8GB though), and totally KILLS my old Core 2 Duo machine. I was able to pull up sessions from my external hard drive after installing my recording software, and sessions that would nearly max out my Core 2 Duo machine barely had this computer running at 50% system resources. Beautiful, just what I needed. The hyper threading on the new Core i series is amazing.
I bought an e-SATA express card to use with the card slot to stream my external hard drive, I run an audio interface off the firewire port, and an iLok. I'm also going to purchase a firewire express card with a Texas Instrument chipset in it to see which transfer rate is better between the e-SATA card and the FW card (it 'should' be the e-SATA, but I'm still going to try it). I also plan on purchasing a wireless mouse, full size keyboard, and 22" monitor, so basically this laptop will sit off to the side as I record, mix, and edit audio. This is everything I need at the moment, and is working out as an audio computer as good or better than I thought. I highly recommend it. Oh, and regarding the Vaio software - for the average user, most of it is actually pretty cool, I just like to run my machine as clean and lean as possible so that most of it's resources are available when it comes time to lay down audio tracks."

I am writing this review from my Dell Mini 9 with 1 gig ram, 8 gig solid state hard drive, running Windows XP. The keyboard is smaller than full sized, but very easy to touch type with. The atom processor and 1 gig of ram handle running XP without a hitch. I loaded Microsoft Office Home/Student edition (minus OneNote) and it too runs fine. The MS Office suite was loaded using a $35 external USB CD drive I bought for this computer. Because this is a Windows computer, the new hardware was recognized and loaded automatically. The wireless connection works smoothly and seeks out a connection well. I have worked on secure networks and using public WiFi, all using the internet easily. The screen has excellent resolution. I can run music on the Media Player, browse the internet and edit word all at the same time.

An 8 gig hard drives seems small, but the built in SD card slot can act as your document storage. I dumped much of the pre-loaded programs that I would never use which leaves nearly 2 gigs on the built in hard drive. I have 35 albums, almost 4 gigs of photos and a bunch of documents on the 16 gig SD card and I still 8 gigs of room for more there. I write documents to the card using a Windows briefcase that syncs with back-ups on my desktop.

If you are looking for a simple laptop/travel computer, this is a good choice.

My IdeaPad (Lenovo) Y450 is a little mighty mouse. It is officially a Lenovo IdeaPad 41892AU model.
I'm still amazed that Lenovo (and other manufacturers) can pack such a complete computer package into such a small laptop shell for such a reasonable price. I'm not a laptop expert but here is my take on this little beauty.
Mine came with Vista Home (I transferred/upgraded free to Win 7) and a variety of other software titles including the usual 90 day trial stuff from Norton and Microsoft Office. It has a very good 14 inch backlight HD LED display screen, a nice keyboard touch and layout, tons of connections (for a mouse), good sound for a laptop, and the capability to run any software available today.
Mine came with 4GB of 204-Pin DDR# SODIMM RAM, the max for any 32 bit operating system. The motherboard has a 2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processory #T6500 with a bus speed of 800MHz and 2M gate. In other words it cooks right along. It has a dual layer DVD, Dolby Home Theater premium audio system which is nice for movies, etc.
It has this face recognition password system which allows you to sign onto the system by just sitting in front of it. That save a few steps and provides good security. The tiny camera is located at the top of the lid.
It's physique is thin and light, 1.4" and a little over 4 pounds.
About the comments of the touchpad being sensitive I have found in my experience that any laptop touchpad is twitchy. That is why I use a $10 wireless mouse, and find things go much easier.
In summ, I think this laptop offers a great bang for the buck and I would recommend it for someone looking for a good general use computer/laptop at a decent price.

I was delighted to purchase an affordable netbook from a reputable company that came equipped with decent software. I've owned this netbook for a short time and all was perfect until one day it failed to start up. I contacted Gateway to address the problem in hopes of guidance for a simple reboot. I was unable to get an actual person on the phone and the automated messages encouraged correspondence via email. Seeing that the netbook was unusable, contact was difficult. I managed to report the problem but have been jerked around for the past 2 weeks with suggestions that have either failed or do not pertain to the issue. I've had to repeat my situation with each response and still have nothing to show for it. They have been extremely hesitant in fulfilling my request to send my netbook in for analysis or exchanging for a new one. The netbook is still under warranty but has proven useless. This whole ordeal has been absolutely frustrating and I sincerely regret ever purchasing a product from Gateway.
Please note that the product itself was wonderful when in working condition and the problem with my particular netbook does not represent all Gateway products. However, please take into consideration that if you do find a problem or defect with your product that a resolution (if at all) will take a long time.

I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.
My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.
When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

This machine is without a doubt the best computer, if not the best piece of technology gear, that I have ever used or owned.

Going to try to keep this review short, but sweet.
I've had it for about 9 months now, basically since the Unibody MBP's came out. First, the construction is just outstanding. The solidness of the enclosure makes the whole thing feel sturdy and basically indestructible. In 9 months, I have treated it like I treat all my equipment - I use it thoroughly without too much concern for cosmetics - and there is not a single scratch or sign of wear on the entire machine. The thing still looks new, after 9 months - that's how durable it is. Incredible.
The speed and responsiveness and stability of the computer itself is excellent. I'm a programmer and photographer, so I take it to the max every time I use the computer, and I expect a lot of it. With 4 GB of RAM it's never sluggish and handles everything better than any computer I've ever owned.
Graphics and gaming performance is surprisingly good with the 2nd dedicated Nvidia 8600 video card. I dual boot to Windows XP (however reluctantly) and it works great.
I don't even need to talk about the software, hopefully you know all about it by now. OSX is truly awesome, especially for programmers. It's so refreshing to have a real operating system where you can pop open a real console and still have a nice graphical interface on top of it. The OS is a matched pair with the quality of the hardware.
In short, this is a seriously great machine. I'm no Mac fanboy - I run Windows, Linux, Mac, whatever - but I'm very impressed with the quality and especially the construction and build durability. It's honestly at a level above any other laptop, it's a pretty stunning difference. If it is more expensive, it will make up for it in longevity and resale value alone. Definitely worth it.

Bluntly, this laptop puts most gaming desktops to shame. The I7 processor is a true upgrade from the Core 2, 1066MHz RAM and SSD give you enough bandwidth and read speed to reduce load times incredibly, and the huge HD screen is like sitting in the front row at a theater. Add to that Blu-Ray, the undisputed best speakers I have ever heard on a portable, and a full-sized illuminated keyboard and you will realize why this is the most impressive gaming laptop on the market.
The price is extremely reasonable given the feature set. Previous generation gaming portables could lighten your wallet by almost $3,000 for stock options, while this one is under $2,000 with just about every bell or whistle you could want. Building a desktop with similar specs would set you back nearly $1,400, thus a $500 price premium for portability is more than acceptable.
In multimedia, simply put, the Qosmio Q880 will handle anything you throw at it. Blu-Ray is flawless, as is 1080P downloaded content. The speakers are very powerful for their size but do lack bass response like all small speakers, though I was impressed with what it had. It seems to use the chassis as a wave guide for low frequencies. The screen is bright with good color reproduction, easily the match of a desktop display, and even when viewed very closely (in your lap for instance) retains sharpness.
As to gaming, again there is no current title that this laptop cannot handle. In extremely demanding games you may have to turn off a few bells and whistles to play at 1920x1080, the same as you would with a single card in a desktop. 6GB of RAM as opposed to the usual 3 or 4 in gaming laptops is refreshing, giving overhead rather than trying to match the current batch of high end games. World of Warcraft, The Sims 3, Borderlands, and Mass Effect 2 all run without a hitch.
Finally the laptop-y things; Battery life is good for a gaming laptop but this is by no means a netbook. You'll get about 2.5-3 hours in constant use provided you're not running 3D games or anything more demanding than Internet and Office apps. Thanks to a CPU that can not just ramp down its frequency but shut off parts of itself on demand, you can have battery life and power in the same box. The appearance of the unit is very cool, but I tend to think a lot of people would like options other than black and red.
A few things I was disappointed to find: There is no install media included with the Q880. I know it is easy to create restore disks, but when plopping down nearly two grand for a laptop you'd think the least they could do would be to print a few DVDs. The first thing I do with a prebuilt system is reinstall everything without the bloatware, and having to use several of my own blank DVDs is asinine. As of my receipt of this unit there are no valid drivers for the GeForce 360M, and the ones available from Toshiba's site do not support it either. (The ones that come preloaded into the OS are edited to support the 360M and are a bit out of date. I had to hack my own to bring them to current, and there are minor bugs as the official drivers do not yet exist. After nVidia officially releases the 300 series a driver will be available.)

I have the model Aspire 5738Z, and it is excellent. I have had it for over 4 months now, use it every day for online University and it has never failed me. Smooth running, no freezeups. The number pad next to the keyboard is an excellent addition as I use it for my math classes. The price is right, the quality is excellent.
Sound is very good, keyboard and keys are comfortable, webcam is awesome. Battery life is as described, even though I mostly use it plugged in. I am running Windows Vista and have no issues. Love this computer.

Picked up nearly the same model at Costco for $599 after discount. Only difference is a 320GB drive instead of the 500GB drive. Seems like fairly solid construction. Keyboard is quiet. Track pad is a tad sensitive but I've adjusted how I use the pad with my fingers. There is a button to shut the pad off should you decide to use a mouse. Processor is fast, and, as advertised, fires up to 2.5GHz+ when doing processor intensive things. Did run a few low graphics intensive games and it did a fairly admirable job, though definitely not on high settings. Wireless-n has been solid. No mute button on the console, which is something I like, but not a big deal. Screen is bright - brighter than expected - though does have a low viewing angle from the top - and the screen doesn't tilt as far back as my old Dell laptop did. So you really have to be pretty square in front of it. I'm not a huge fan of the outer blue plastic, but, hey, I don't look at the back of the screen when I'm using it. The matte finish on the touchpad and handrest is smart (not like the HP's which show fingerprints VERY easily). Overall, great value. Time will tell on durability (I'm hoping for 1.5-2yrs).

After replacing my 8 year old Dell Laptop, I looked into this Vaio upon the recommendation of a few friends. I'm not a tech-guy by any stretch, just wanted a solid everyday home laptop with good memory for interent, Itunes, Quickbooks, Skype and some word processing (no gaming) and this laptop absolutely fit the bill! Solid construction, unique and appealing design (case texture is great, shows no fingerprints), comfortable, wide and spacious keyboard, lightning fast-start up and downloads, user-freindly, gorgeous Hi-Def screen, great for watching videos and DVD's, fast CD and DVD burner and an awesome camera for Skyping with friends and family. For the price (just a shy over $600) and complete with Windows 7, you can't beat it! Battery life is fine too. Unlike some complaints, mine gets just under 3 hours which suits my needs and also charges very fast. I've had freinds that have owned Vaio's years with little to no problems, and now glad to own one myself. If you're looking for a rock solid laptop with style and function, get this one. I'm happy I made this purchase, would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

"Let me start by saying that I use my computer for much more than average daily use. I record multi track audio (i.e. home studio), as well as average daily tasks. I also work in a place that is very much pro Mac/anti PC. That's okay, I'm not biased either way, you just get more horsepower for your money with PC.
I downsized from my desktop system which was a Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM on XP Pro. It was working, but I needed more horsepower (i.e. faster processor and more RAM), and I also figured a laptop that could suit my home studio needs would be perfect because I could then be mobile as well.
A lot of research went into purchasing a laptop. I left no stone unturned, and looked at ALL the models, up to a certain price range (under $1000), even models with lesser specs in certain areas than this one.
After much research, I decided this has everything I need. I've had it about three weeks now, and it's a great machine. Even some of my coworkers who prefer Macs said it's a nice laptop, and we all know computers where I work. After seeing the specs and the pricetag on this, they agreed that I did well.
My only gripe about it is that because it's a Vaio, it comes with TONS of extra Vaio software (as well as other trial software, and other programs that I have no use for). Three weeks later, I'm still experimenting with which Vaio software I should and should not uninstall. Some Vaio programs are necessary to operate things like the function keys, where others are not necessary. I will not post a list here, but search out the individual programs and make your own decision. Other than that, this thing ROCKS!!! Nice clear graphics, fast processor, good RAM (I plan to expand mine up to the allowable 8GB though), and totally KILLS my old Core 2 Duo machine. I was able to pull up sessions from my external hard drive after installing my recording software, and sessions that would nearly max out my Core 2 Duo machine barely had this computer running at 50% system resources. Beautiful, just what I needed. The hyper threading on the new Core i series is amazing.
I bought an e-SATA express card to use with the card slot to stream my external hard drive, I run an audio interface off the firewire port, and an iLok. I'm also going to purchase a firewire express card with a Texas Instrument chipset in it to see which transfer rate is better between the e-SATA card and the FW card (it 'should' be the e-SATA, but I'm still going to try it). I also plan on purchasing a wireless mouse, full size keyboard, and 22" monitor, so basically this laptop will sit off to the side as I record, mix, and edit audio. This is everything I need at the moment, and is working out as an audio computer as good or better than I thought. I highly recommend it. Oh, and regarding the Vaio software - for the average user, most of it is actually pretty cool, I just like to run my machine as clean and lean as possible so that most of it's resources are available when it comes time to lay down audio tracks."

I just received this nice 15.6" notebook and I admit that I like it! The sound is great. The keypad is really handy when you need it. And the reponse of this computer is satisfying with windows 7 loaded.
However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did.
In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for $299.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook ($379.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook...

The MSI X340 is an extremely slim (0.7" thin) and light (just under 3-lb) laptop that rivals the MacBook Air, but without the high price tag and it also runs Windows! Vista Home Premium 64-bit to be exact. I have an Lenovo U110, which is an amazing laptop all on its, but I found myself wanting a bigger screen, and the x340 is the perfect answer, its 13.4" LED-backlit LCD screen is bright and show good vivid color contrast. The keyboard is not as responsive as the Lenovo (which generally regarded as having the best keyboard in the industy), but nevertheless, it is a very respectable keyboard that show little flex during typing. The HDMI 1080p works perfectly on my Samsung LCD, which I used quite often not just to watch video, but also to simply use it as a large computer monitor along with my cordless Logitech keyboard and mouse. The HDMI also passes audio to my Samsung LCD TV speaker, not sure if it pass 5.1 digital surround signal since I don't have an HDMI AV receiver. This is just about the most perfect ultra-portable laptop, with its price, weight, large 13.4" screen. The only thing I can think of that would make this laptop perfect is an additional USB port (currently only 2) and the additional of a second/right mouse button, and perhaps a slightly more powerful battery. The standard 4-cell last a little over 3 hours of mixed use with Wifi on at all time with FTP upload, web browsing, document creation and screen brightness set at about 75%. I know some of you might also want to add DVD/blu-ray drive to the mix, but the resulting increase in price, size and weight will not justify the benefit. This is a wonderful laptop for those of us who want a small and light ultraportable with a large screen, but didn't want to spend more than $1000 for a new laptop

My wife have always had VAIO laptops, last year we decided to give a Dell netbook a try, we thought smaller will be better, oh boy! we were so wrong, we totally missed the fact that even tough she does not do any very power demanding computing, she grew used to the performance of an actual computer not a toy (Dell).
She didn't want to say anything but I know she wasn't happy with a netbook, so I had to find her a nice PINK SONY VAIO and the only I could find was a flowery version of this one on sonystyle, well my wife likes girly stuff of course but that thing from sonystyle was too much, until I came accross this one on amazon, I'm saved!
Performance out of the box is amazing thanks to Windows 7 and SONY deciding not to fill it up with crapware, It is so good that I skipped my regular formatting/OS clean install that I have performed on each and every computer I (and wife) have ever owned (I switch computers about 6-8 times a year), yes is that good!
Sony's craftsmanship is exquisite and you are paying for it! The finishing is awesome, it is light pink very classy and glossy, keyboard feels great, well arranged and almost silent, mousepad works as expected, the screen resolution is not great but is not bad either, battery life and speakers are ... let say, above average.
Stop thinking about it, BUY IT, you are going to like it. (Amazon's return policy is very accommodating tough... just in case)
Have seen those ads on tv for products that will "make you larger" ? this one will make you 14.1" larger and your wife very 'pleased'. (I know, I'm gross)

I'm not a computer guru, I can't quote specs at a person, but I know when something gets the job done and this little guy does. Today I ran for six hours on battery, had another hour and a half left when I plugged in. During this time, I was surfing the web, streaming youtube and hulu, and working with Photoshop and Pro Show Producer. It even handled encoding video with Producer like a champ. It never got hot, just luke warm, it never seemed to lag, set up was a breeze, touchpad is nice and responsive, it's just been an absolute joy and it looks beautiful to boot. The speakers aren't very loud, but for everything else you get with this machine, I'm not going to quibble or take away stars for speaker volume. I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable machine with long battery life that still packs a little power.

Well, if you are looking for a huuuuge laptop.. this is the one. Its got a lot of nice features and its really pretty and the sound is great. I bought this for game and movie play which is perfect. Everything runs fast and smooth. I love it. I also needed lots of memory to store tons of photos. This does all of that for me... not to mention the pictures look ten times better on this screen. Love it. Some negatives, The laptop is very glossy.. shows lots of finger prints. Also, be aware that microsoft office is only a trial software package. I guess I didnt read the fine print. Also, not sure why the serial and part numbers didnt work when trying to register my laptop online. ?? Anyway, Just keep in mind that this is HUUUGE for a laptop. Its not so easy traveling with it at all. Its rather heavy and there are hardly any choices as far as case covers and cool bags to carry it in go. I may end up buying a toshiba net book for travel. I gave five stars because TOSHIBA is awesome. I love this laptop. Pretty much can use it as a desktop because of its size.

I have the model Aspire 5738Z, and it is excellent. I have had it for over 4 months now, use it every day for online University and it has never failed me. Smooth running, no freezeups. The number pad next to the keyboard is an excellent addition as I use it for my math classes. The price is right, the quality is excellent.

Sound is very good, keyboard and keys are comfortable, webcam is awesome. Battery life is as described, even though I mostly use it plugged in. I am running Windows Vista and have no issues. Love this computer.

I've seen a couple of bad reviews simply because users purchased this computer with the intent to make it their "gaming" computer, and then were disappointed with the outcome. Check the specs and your game requirements first. If you truly want a gaming computer, you probably shouldn't be looking at Laptops in the first place.
It's a great computer at a reasonable price. If you just need something for work, school, and surfing the web, it's perfect.

after careful consideration & tons of research, I bought this laptop direct from the hp website mostly because of the hard drive space & the huge screen. I was a bit worried that i had gotten my hopes up too high but this product absolutely did not disappoint! This is the fourth laptop computer i've owned, the others being two ibms (one bought through my university, it imploded two months after the warranty ran out) & an iBook that i absolutely hated. this computer is by far my favourite. It runs fast, quiet & smooth & the screen has such a brilliant picture! For school i use a lot of (allegedly) very high end computers for Computer Aided Design & Illustration classes, & honestly the picture on this notebook is a thousand times clearer than those more expensive machines. Vista has taken some time to get used to, but eventually i will adjust, just like i did when XP came out. This computer is an absolute steal. It's definitely the best $700 i've ever spent.

I will admit this is my first netbook but I do have two laptops and two other desktops in the house. The keyboard is absolutely great on this machine, it is what attracted me to the Toshiba initially. I have had this machine for about a week now and so far there is nothing that I can really complain about. The battery life is incredible, although I have yet to try to drain it. Today the machine was on, but not in constant use, for over six hours and it still showed 40% battery life. The screen is very good and even though only 10.1" I am forgetting that I'm on a small machine. Very spacious hard drive at 250GB. This prompted me to permanently move my iTunes collection to this machine so that I can update my podcasts and sync regularly while travelling.
I purchased the machine primarily as a personal and entertainment machine while travelling for business. I am able to keep it next to my full size work laptop while responding to email or other tasks and easily "jump" over to it to access Gmail or Facebook (prohibited on the company issued laptop). I have also used it to stream Netflix while in a hotel with little issue, any issues were mainly to poor wifi coverage in the room.
Toshiba has done a very nice job of setting up a variety of very useful Function+F key shortcuts. Mute,Lock,Sleep,Power Mode,Hibernate,Brightness,Wifi can all be accessed with a quick keystroke.
The sleep mode actually works very well and "wakes" to a ready to use state in mere seconds.
Win7 Starter is really not bad, little functionality has been removed so as to keep the user from bogging down the system with too many option but still I find very usable and you really don't miss the removed functions. Since this machine is upgradeable to 2GB of RAM I most likely will just to pepp it up a but right now I LOVE THIS MACHINE and recommend it highly to anyone, even if a little on the pricey side!

I've been using this machine for several weeks now and am completely satisfied so far. I have had no problems what so ever. I intend to upgrade to 2GB of RAM but have not yet and can only believe the performance will get better. On the heaviest days of usage I can usually get 7-8 hours on the battery. I have been using this machine to stream Netflix usually without issue with a strong WIFI signal. I have installed Office 2007 and have not had any problems. I have Skype installed but have not used it for voice calls yet. I will be taking this to Mexico. I will update again on the performance then!

We have noted various other computers while both shopping and helping solve our family's various computer issues, so I knew about what I wanted when it came time to replace our 10 year old IBM T23 Think Pad. Price was also a factor in our selection and frankly I simply wanted a Lenovo having had a long and very good experience with my T23. Lenovo is continuing the tougness of the past generation of IBM laptops.
The Lenovo G530 is really a fantastic laptop. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the $1200 laptops have, but it is extremely quick in doing everything I need when I go online. There is tons of storage space with a 165 gig Hard Drive, plus tons of memory-- and I am even starting to like Windows 7. I may eventually go back to Linux Ubuntu distro which is my OS of choice.
The Lenovao G530 has a very bright wide screen moniter. All functions are responding well. Lenovo has continued the IBM PC and Laptop appearance, and I chuckle at the black matte finish and think: "something only a mother could love." Don't worry about appearances, they still have the toughness that I enjoyed for years with my T23. Imagine going from 30 gig hard drive up to 165 gigs, and the same relative improvements on the processor speeds and memory capacity. This unit literally flies from on web page to another. The visual properties of the 15.4 inch monitor as well as the more than adequate sound card give good performance for enjoying videos as well as extended listening to your favorite audios through Windows Media which is included in the Windows 7 Premium OS.

I plug in my Koss PortaPro Headphones and hear every detail of the music. The sound card gives crisp digital audio performance that you will really enjoy. I'm not an audiophile but enjoy listening to a lot of good music and I appreciate the sound that I get with the Lenovo G530
We are very satisfied with this purchase which arrived from Amazon in just two days. We used the $40 Amazon Vista rebate so the entire purchase was $400.00 which is a very good value for a laptop with the large screen and obvious quality and speed. A tip that works for me, instead of paying extra to buy Windows Office, we installed Open Office which works great for me both on Windows 7 and our Linux OS which I have on our Dell Desktop PC.
I recommend this computer and feel you'll get many performance features that you get on computers that cost much more. I have owned Gateway, Dell, HP and IBM and much prefer the current Lenovo G530 to all of them. Our Dell Desktops are recent purchases. The G530 has quickly taken over as my favorite. have never written a review of any kind, not that I don't come across good products or service, but it's like the next item on one's list which one never gets to. However, the ul80vt-a1 is just too awesome a laptop that after one week of ownership, I am still jumping up and down like a little puppy, given my typical enthusiasm normally lasts no more than 48 hours.
By the time you read my review, you've already known all the good things about this laptop -- very long battery life, fast performance, cool to touch, bright screen with sharp resolution, clear and loud speakers, thin and light weight in spite of the presence of an optical drive, fast to boot. The list goes on and on, and it is all true. By the way, there is one item I haven't seen mentioned yet -- the battery charges extremely fast without getting hot. And no, I don't work for Asus. In fact, before I started researching for a good laptop to buy, I didn't even know who or what Asus was, and I still cannot pronounce its name.
But what makes me so happy is that all the bad things I heard in these reviews are also not true. Not every single feature is perfect. There are some items one can fault with, but they really amount to nothing. This is what I want everyone to know so one doesn't gloss over this great laptop because someone out there doesn't like the feel of the keyboard.
1. Regardless of what other people said, the build quality of my laptop is very high, no different from the HP's, the Dell's and the Lenovo's I have owned. No, it is not flimsy, and everything snaps correctly with no gap or sharp edge.
2. The keyboard is fine. It does not feel the same as a Lenovo, but it doesn't flex like others say either. It's just that the keys are not as bouncy, so they feel a little bit soft.
3. Some reviewers mentioned the screen does not have sharp contrast. It is true when the brightness is set on high, the screen may look a little washed out, but it's not something you cannot solve by tilting the screen a little up or down. By the way, reflection from the glossy screen is not an issue, to my surprise, and you can see fine outdoor.
4. The touch pad arguably is the worst feature on this laptop. It is more sticky than one with a matte finish, and once in a while you will go out of boundary without realising it. The large single touch pad button below is positioned awkwardly and is quite honestly hard to press because the frame the button is set in is in the way. The touch pad one can get used to; the button, highly questionable.
5. Yes, fingerprints do show up, but they can be readily wiped off without much fanfare. However, if you like having a bag of greasy chips in one hand and use the computer with the other, this laptop can be a problem for you. On the other hand, it may help one kick one's junk food addiction.
6. So far I have two minor problems. Both are related to switching the power management mode:

6a. When I plug and unplug from the power cord, the screen does black out for a couple of seconds, unlike other laptops I've owned. Furthermore, sometimes when the screen comes back on, it will flicker when I mouse over something on the screen. The only remedy I have found so far is to close the application (IE 8 in my case) and start it again.

6b. When I press the Graphix Boost button, it changes the time zone automatically to pacific time (GMT-8). I haven't tried changing through the power management tool by selecting any of the Power4Gear options, but it probably will change the time zone just the same. It's minor to change the time zone back, provided you notice something is wrong with the time.
I genuinely think there is more than a good chance you will be very happy with the laptop. I know I am.

I just received this nice 15.6" notebook and I admit that I like it! The sound is great. The keypad is really handy when you need it. And the reponse of this computer is satisfying with windows 7 loaded.
However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did.
In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for $299.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook ($379.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook...

Had to return the initial laptop because of dead pixel(s). RMA was fast, painless and free. Unfortunately, the replacement also had the same problem- but not as obvious- so we kept it. After removing all the trial junk that comes with a new laptop, am very happy with the purchase and price. Screen is huge, widescreen and bright. Would def buy again- but watch out for those dead pixels!!

I purchase an HP NC6000 laptop from Techno Intellingece, not only was the delivery exceptional, but the customer service via phone and e-mail was just as good. In March 2008, I decided it was time to upgrade from a G4-based laptop to one of the new Intel models. I deliberated back and forth whether the lower priced MacBook would be sufficient or whether to pay the premium for the "Pro" model. Ultimately, I decided upon the MacBook Pro for these reasons.
Construction quality

The aluminum case of the MacBook Pro reminds me of a product made by the Swiss. The build quality is outstanding for a mass-produced device. It feels very substantial, and all the pieces fit together nearly seamlessly. The MacBook's case, however, is made from a high-grade plastic rather than metal. It's nice ... but I found the front edge of the MacBook's case a bit sharp on my wrists as I typed.
Ports

Compared with the MacBook, the MacBook Pro provides an additional USB port plus Firewire 800. The latter is desirable for people who work with video and external drives that have Firewire 800 connectors. The ExpressCard slot is useful for future expansion and services such as wireless broadband (EVDO).
Keyboard

Keyboard experiences are subjective; but I find the keyboard on the MacBook Pro the most comfortable of any laptop I've ever used. It feels solid and responsive. Plus, its backlighting is helpful when typing in dark environments.
Dedicated video

Unlike the MacBook that shares system memory for video (integrated graphics), the MacBook Pro has a dedicated video processor. This is beneficial for driving large external displays and running graphics-intensive applications.
Is the MacBook Pro worth the $700 price differential over a MacBook? That depends on whether you are a general home computer user (i.e., e-mail, web browsing, iTunes, word processing) or someone who uses their laptop for more advanced purposes. My user profile is more in the second category. Also, since I intend to keep this computer for three years, I figure that the premium breaks down to about $233 each year. This seems reasonable to me for something I use every day.
In view of the additional quality and benefits that the MacBook Pro offers, I think its higher price brings with it commensurate value. It's hard to imagine even finicky laptop users being disappointed with the MacBook Pro.
P.S. -- There are two 15-inch MacBook Pro models. I bought the 2.4 gHz "entry level" model. It is the better value. I do not feel the 2.5 gHz MacBook Pro is worth the extra $500.
Also, people who care to add system memory (beyond the stock 2 gigabytes supplied by Apple) ought to purchase it from a third-party vendor and install it themselves. It is a simple process.

I purchased this laptop as a desktop replacement and I use it for gaming, watching movies, writing software, and basic Microsoft Office and web browsing tasks. Overall I am extremely pleased with it and would highly recommend it to others. Here's the breakdown:
PROS:

- This is an extremely fast machine. It boots up in under a minute with Windows 7 and I have yet to notice the occasional lag with starting up programs that I experience with most Windows PC's.

- Newer games like "Dragon Age: Origins" run extremely well on this machine with all of the graphics maxed out

- The screen on this computer is beautiful. The color quality and contrast are extremely good and there is a ton of screen real estate. Some people have complained that it isn't full 1080p but I find that the 1680x945 resolution makes icons and text the perfect size for this size of screen.

- Multitasking works great with a dual-core processor (four virtual cores with hyperthreading) and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. I routinely have 12 Firefox tabs up while watching videos in iTunes and editing four or five MS Office documents. A lot of computers don't like this but the Q860 handles it wonderfully.

- The battery life is over three hours, which is pretty good for such a behemoth.
CONS:

- This is an extremely heavy laptop and I wouldn't recommend it for frequent business travel. That being said, I do use this laptop for grad school and haul it back and forth to class one day a week using a Toshiba 18" gaming backpack and it isn't terrible on my back. I would definitely recommend a backpack if you want to carry this thing around as a normal laptop shoulder bag would probably destroy your neck and shoulder.

- Both Toshiba and Amazon claim on their websites that this keyboard is backlit but unfortunately, it isn't. Amazon customer service handled this issue extremely well after I reported it, so I can't complain about this too much. All X505-series keyboards are compatible so you can probably pick up a backlit one off of eBay if that's a big deal to you.

- There is a decent amount of junkware pre-installed on this system, although not nearly as much as on the last Dell computer I bought. It's kind of annoying that Toshiba does this on a high-performance computer that will probably be purchased by people that don't want or need it.
OVERALL:

- I did a large amount of research before buying this laptop and as of this moment, there isn't a better value out there in gaming laptops than this. It lacks some of the higher-end features such as dual graphics cards, a 1080p display, and solid-state drives, but for the money you can't do better than this. I am now selling both of my desktops and I plan on making this my sole computer.

This little computer replaces my Laptop, my Palm, and my Franklin Planner. It is very light and surpisingly resilient. The wireless features are fabulous. I got this laptop at the Black Friday price of $469.00. It's a great medium size laptop with an AMD M500 which performs about on par with a Core 2 Duo T6600. It also has a 10 key which is really nice. With 3g of RAM upgradeable to 8 (I boosted mine to 4) and 320g of storage it will perform well and store all the music and video I need. I gave 4 stars because it could have a better video card and I prefer the older Toshiba style Touchpad that is indented rather than flush with the casing. I believe that the 32 bit OS it comes with will only recognize 4 gigs of RAM, so it is odd that they assume you could beef up the RAM to 8 with a 32 bit OS. I installed Windows 7 64 bit so problem solved. Also,it is Toshiba! Great quality. If you are looking for a lower priced laptop with a good amount of storage and modern processing ability, this one could definitely fit the bill! A manual to turn it on? Seriously???

Be aware that Apple considers batteries "consumables" and are not covered by any warranty. The warranty is tied to your MacBook Pro. If your laptop is out of warranty, so is your battery. This, sadly, is what I discovered when I called Apple tech support about my defective batteries.

I have 2: one that originally came with my laptop, and one I purchased separately for extra power on the road. Both used minimally and about 2 years old when they started having major problems holding a charge and reporting the wrong remaining charge. With one battery, at 85% remaining, the laptop would just completely and suddenly shut down.
These batteries are supposed to last up to 300 cycles, according to the specs. Mine died way before that. When not on the road, I remove the battery and run on AC power, in order to prolong the battery's lifespan (heat deteriorates the cells). One battery has had 146 charge cycles and the other has had 66, as reported by the System Profiler. The charge capacity is wildly erratic, and both show up as "Check Battery" in Profiler status.
Apple issued a battery recall on this SKU, but unfortunately, mine was not eligible for replacement. Non-recalled batteries like mine still have quality control issues, which Apple will not acknowledge.
You may be fortunate to have a good battery and not have to go through the problems I experienced. Mine are 2/2 defective, so I am frustrated at Apple's lack of support. Just something to be aware of when deciding to purchase this battery as a spare because $110 is not a small chunk of change.

PROS: Small size, bright display, lightweight, SDHC card slot

CONS: Not very fast, no Web cam, funky stylus storage
I purchased a Samsung Q1EX with 2 GB RAM, 1.2 GHz VIA Nano processor, Windows XP, and 32 GB solid-state hard drive (not from Amazon, sorry). The SSHD added about $300 to the price. I needed a small tablet PC running Windows XP to use in my unpressurized airplane to run electronic chart and navigation software. Conventional spinning HDDs aren't very reliable with cabin altitudes over 10,000 ft. so I needed the SSHD. I rarely travel so I don't need a full-size laptop, and when I do travel I want a laptop with a small footprint.
I purchased the Q1EX with a keyboard portfolio, which combines a tablet support, a dock with VGA and LAN ports, and a keyboard in a nice folding protective vinyl case. Other recommended options are a Stowaway Bluetooth mouse (the portfolio keyboard has a touch pad) and a USB port expander (the Q1EX has 2 USB 2.0 ports).
The Q1EX is extremely thin and light. The touchscreen is very bright. There are no buttons on the device (unlike the other Q1s) except the on-off-lock switch and the Dial Menu wheel on the left and the CTRL-ALT-DEL button on the right. I use a 32 GB SDHC card so storage hasn't been an issue. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built-in. The sound quality and volume are good. It's a nice little package.
I haven't encountered any real cons about the device except it seems very slow to boot up, almost as if it has frozen or crashed. There is a camera on the back but it would've been nice to have a camera facing the user. Built-in GPS would've been nice too. If you want a small tablet you'll compromise on the tiny characters in 1024x600 res, but it is very sharp and bright (barely readable in direct sunlight, like most touchscreens, but it's fine outdoors in shade). Having to carry a keyboard is a slight hassle but programs such as DialKeys might solve that issue. Other reviews I've read say that videos are choppy but I haven't noticed that. The stylus is stored in a little slot on the wrist strap, but I don't use the wrist strap so I need to bring a stylus or just use fingers.
If you want or need small, the Q1EX is great, and you'll accept the trade-offs.

Pros: It has almost everything someone would want. My 4 year old loves the touch screen for websites that allow him to interact (ex fisher price website). Mine came with Windows vista, and I've been waiting for my windows 7 upgrade for 2 months now, hope to see it soon. Screen is bright, touch screen is great, finger print id is awesome, and computer is fast once you remove the bloat software HP installs.

Cons: I've owned this laptop for 3 months now and while it's great to have all these bells and whistles I can't stand the Fan noise. The fan is running 100% about 75% of the time and it's noisy. Also the heat from this laptop is crazy. My dell 6400 insp. ran somewhat hot but not as bad as this. Like I stated above I'm still waiting for my copy of windows 7, but looks like this one comes with windows 7 already.
Conclusion: Being this is the only one like this on the market (reminds me of my ipod touch) I'd buy it again. Hope HP comes out with a solution to the fans making so much noise.
